Your dental implant journey starts with a consultation with Dr. Herman. This visit is your opportunity to ask any questions you may have about dental implants. By the end of this visit, you’ll thoroughly understand the dental implant process and have a clearer idea on whether this treatment option is right for you.
During this consultation Dr. Herman will:
Together, you and Dr. Herman will decide if dental implants are the right tooth replacement option for you. If you do decide that implants are the answer, Dr. Herman will create your customized treatment plan.
In order to develop your customized treatment plan, Dr. Herman will take into consideration all of the information he collected from your initial consultation and evaluation. He will determine which type of dental implant solutions will work best for you and whether you’ll need any supplemental procedures–such as bone grafting or gum disease treatment–to prepare your mouth for dental implant placement.
Once your treatment plan has been approved by you and any necessary supplemental procedures are complete, you’ll have your dental implants placed. This process may be completed in one appointment or several, depending on the implant solution you’ll be receiving.
During this procedure, Dr. Herman starts by placing the implant fixture into your jawbone. In some cases, the abutment and replacement tooth, bridge, or full-arch denture are placed during the same appointment so you can leave with a fully restored smile. In other cases, the fixture is fitted with a temporary crown so the jawbone can fully heal before the permanent restoration is placed. Osseointegration–the process in which the jawbone fuses to the implant fixture–takes place during the healing period, forming a strong foundation for your replacement teeth.
For the most part, no. When your implant is placed, we’ll provide you with an anesthetic, which will ensure that you feel no pain during your surgery. Afterward, it’s not unusual to experience soreness in your jaw for the first couple of weeks. Depending on your situation, you may be prescribed a pain-killer — otherwise, over-the-counter medications should suffice.
Typically, placing an implant only takes a couple of hours. However, your treatment time will be longer if you’re also having any supplemental procedures performed.
Generally, it’s recommended that patients rest for a day or two immediately following their implant surgery. But after those days of rest, you’ll be completely free to travel. We recommend that you let your implant provider know about your vacation so they can schedule your check-ups and next steps accordingly.
The healing period following dental implant placement lasts for about three to six months. This time is required for the process of osseointegration to occur. It’s this process that allows the implant fixture to fuse with your jawbone, and its success is a requirement in order for the treatment to work properly.
Since we numb your mouth with an anesthetic before the procedure, many patients can undergo implant surgery without sedation. If you suffer from dental anxiety, you can always ask your provider about sedation options.
After your implant fixture is placed, you’ll want to stick to foods that are soft while you wait for it to heal. Foods that are hard or chewy can upset the implant area, preventing it from properly healing. Some foods we recommend are cold soups, yogurt, and soft or melted cheeses.
This largely depends on what type of anesthesia or sedation you receive during surgery. If you receive a local anesthetic, you’ll be fine to drive yourself home following your procedure. But if you have a general sedative administered, then you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
